The Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI)
Business Description
The RNLI is a charity dedicated to saving lives at sea around the coasts of the UK. It is largely a volunteer organisation and was founded in 1824. It is funded entirely by membership fees, voluntary donations and legacies from members of the public.
Project Description
This project was setup in co-ordination with Chichester University and was aimed to find out more about the physical state of lifeboat crew, both before and after a rescue mission.
The site needed to be quick to load due to some users still having dial-up Internet access from rescue stations. It also needed to be very easy to use as most of its uses had little or no experience with websites.
Solution
We were chosen by the RNLI to create this site as they had seen previous site examples and wanted to work with a robust content management system that could have custom modules added quickly and easily.
The website features a registration section which then restricts users from using the site for 24 hours (for after a rescue mission). They then login after a mission and fill in a range of forms explaining how they feel, areas of soreness and overall mood - all of which is captured anonymously.
The data can then be extracted by both the RNLI and Chichester University for analysis and feedback.
Result
The website has played a very important role in the data collection of hundreds of RNLI servicemen from around the UK. There are now plans to use the same system for different emergency services.
