Bike Safety Lighting System from Project Aura
As keen riders ourselves, we love it when something innovative and beautifully designed is launched for cyclists. This bike safety lighting system from Project Aura fits the bill perfectly.
We know that riding at night is more dangerous than during the day, but traditional lighting systems have problems when it comes to side-streets, or traffic viewing a rider sideways. Project Aura solves this problem.
The LED lighting system fits onto the bike rims and is connected to a dynamo which powers the system without the need for batteries. The LED’s change colour depending on the speed of the rider, glowing red when riding slowly, blue when speeding up and white when at full pace.
The project was the brainchild of Ethan Frier and Jonathan Ota, industrial design students at Carnegie Mellon University who focused on the issue of nighttime cycling accidents with an idea and a Small Undergraduate Research Grant (SURG).
