A brave new website for a BAFTA winning games developer.
Web Design & Development / UI & UX / Brand Development
Creative Assembly is a British video game development team founded in 1987. In 2005 it joined the SEGA family as a European subsidiary. The business is built on a team of world-class, diverse and multi-national creatives working from state-of-the-art studios in West Sussex, UK and Sofia, Bulgaria.
Its passion for bringing stories to life and commitment to authenticity has sealed its reputation for AAA quality games development – as well as earning BAFTAs and Ivor Novellos along the way.
Creative Assembly approached Strawberrysoup with a view to redesigning their website. This is the story of how we worked with their team to deliver a ground-breaking new website that served to better showcase the legacy Creative Assembly is building.
From concept to completion
In order to get to the best possible result we explored several approaches for the new creative direction of the site. This involved everything from user interface design to experimentation with image treatment and typography, as well as different ways of using imagery for storytelling.
There was an opportunity to significantly improve the way in which Creative Assembly showcases its work and ethos in a bid to attract new talent and better reflect its brand positioning.
A word from
Sam / Designer
“As a genuine fan of Creative Assembly’s work for me this was a real passion project. We set ourselves an ambitious challenge coming up with the creative concept for the Timeline, it certainly saw us really push the boundaries and go that extra mile to get the best result”
A word from
Harry / Lead Developer
“It was a really fun and complex front-end development project to work on, having to ensure all the intricacies of the design rendered well across a multitude of breakpoints during testing – including those subtle parallax effects which give the site some really nice visual transitions”
Travel through time
We were tasked with bringing the history and heritage of Creative Assembly to life online.
To give a true sense of progression and provide users with an immersive experience, we went though a painstaking process of image editing, stitching and enhancing lighting and shadows to effectively stitch the history of the studio into a seamless tapestry of key milestones and work.
Brand & Heritage
We were tasked with translating the brand values online, going through exercises to develop the colour scheme and undertaking photographic treatment where required.
The timeline sought to illustrate the heritage and achievements of the studio over time – show rather than tell. The result is a dynamic timeline with a cinematic feel that goes above and beyond the typical ‘About Us’.
The site serves as a key platform for recruitment. We built the site on Drupal 8 and integrated it with Jobvite’s API to pull the careers listings in automatically.
In order to attract new talent, it was key to put a focus on the quality of work and reflect Creative Assembly’s work ethos – inviting potential employees to work with a diverse and talented team of like-minded people doing great work and building a legacy.
Putting the games artwork front and centre within the designs to deliberately focus user attention on the high standard of work.
Fully responsive design
Taking a mobile-first approach we ensured that the new site delivered a seamless and consistently engaging experience for users across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
