Twitter goes wordless and gives the bird a haircut

Twitter has today launched a new logo, maturing the beloved bird ‘Larry’ and giving him a haircut. The microblogging platform has decided to replace their current bubbled text logo with the bird icon as their main identity.

Removing ‘twitter’ and the lower case ‘t’ icon altogether is a brave move, showing that they believe the bird is fully recognisable and that they’re famous enough to go wordless.

Doug Bowman, Twitter’s creative director has explained the thinking behind the new bird logo:

Our new bird grows out of love for ornithology, design within creative constraints, and simple geometry. This bird is crafted purely from three sets of overlapping circles — similar to how your networks, interests and ideas connect and intersect with peers and friends. Whether soaring high above the earth to take in a broad view, or flocking with other birds to achieve a common purpose, a bird in flight is the ultimate representation of freedom, hope and limitless possibility.

The new bird is definitely a great update – it does look a lot smoother and more mature – but just as Facebook’s ‘f’ is iconic, I don’t think people will be forgetting the bubbled ‘t’ anytime soon.
